Vegan Orange French Toast Recipe

Vegan French toast recipes often include either some sort of chia seed mix or attempting to coat a slice of bread in a flax egg. Now, I’m very much guilty of doing this in the past too, but with the number of egg replacers on the market now, I thought it was about time I attempted a new and improved version, which resulted in this vegan orange French toast recipe.

This recipe is perfect for Christmas because it doesn’t take too much prep when there’s already a lot going on in the kitchen, and the only orange flavour 100% essential is some orange juice, which I can almost guarantee you’ll have in the house at that time of year anyway. I think this is a great Christmas breakfast because it feels rich and indulgent but isn’t too heavy or sickly that it will ruin your appetite later.

INGREDIENT CHOICES

Bread

I’m gluten intolerant. And if any of you are also GF/ coeliac, you’ll know that gluten free bread often ruins a recipe like this. It’s usually on the thinner side and a bit too flimsy to be soaked without becoming too soggy. For reference, I used Schar Deli Style for this recipe. It’s a GF sourdough alternative and a little bit thicker than the majority of mass market GF loaves of bread. It’s just under £3 for a pack of five slices, so it’s stupidly expensive, but I think it’s the best one for the job.

Egg Replacer

I used Orgran for this recipe, and I was really impressed! It was my first time using it and I can’t wait to try this particular egg replacer in a few more dishes.

But I think that any liquid based egg replacer would work well for this one. I’m planning on trying this out with some Crack’d soon and will update with a verdict once I’ve tried it, but I also think something like the Ogg’s egg replacer would work well too.

  • 2 Orgran eggs
  • ½ cup orange juice

  • 1 tbsp vegan cream
  • 1 TSP orange extract optional
  • 4 tbsp vegan butter
  • 6 slices GF bread

Instructions

  1. In a small mixing bowl whisk your egg replacer powder with water until it is light and fluffy. Pour in oat cream, sugar and mix to combine, then stir in the orange juice and orange extract (if using)
  2. Pour into a flat dish.
  3. Add dairy free margarine to frying pan and melt over a gentle heat. Melt 1 tablespoon to fry 1-2 breads.
  4. Dip slices of bread into the mixture until soaked through. Drip to remove excess.
