Smoothie Ice Cubes Recipe

A smoothie ice cubes recipe? I’m going to assume that for a lot of people potentially seeing this that the concept of that seems totally unnecessary, but for me, this has been a game changer, and I thought I can’t be the only one. So, let me explain why I think this is essential, and how you might find yourself using it too.

Let me begin, I hate ice in smoothies. Hate it. If you scroll back through all my smoothie recipes, you’ll find that they’re all ice free. I think when you add ice, you can always taste the ice, the texture is always off. It’s never smooth or creamy. And I hate the texture of an icy smoothie. But I also don’t want to add some dairy free milk and protein powder to a shaker at the end of a run and call it a day.

THE PERKS OF SMOOTHIE ICE CUBES?

They’re made balanced. They contain healthy fats, so even though they’re frozen, they blend easily and make a drink creamy. An issue I sometimes find is that whatever my favourite protein is right now doesn’t exactly taste the best with whatever frozen fruit I have right now. And that issue goes away with these. Although they have frozen fruit, the amount is so small that the cubes simply offer a little sweetness, the fruit flavours don’t really come through. And it means you can have a simple, smooth, chilled protein smoothie in less than five minutes with just three ingredients.

It’s great for those who are bulking, have a small appetite, and need something after a workout, but don’t necessarily want to eat. And, of course, you can make a whole batch in bulk that you can use at any time without having to think about what you have in the fridge to make your smoothie.

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

This recipe has a lot of ingredient choices/ variables, so I don’t want to do an in-depth rundown of the nutrient value of every ingredient, but each serving (5 cubes) as made below contains 6g of protein, 1g of fibre and 52 calories.

A five cube serving turned into a smoothie using one scoop of protein powder and a cup of dairy free milk contains 260 (200-300) calories and 38g (33-40g) of protein per serving. The information in bracket is an estimate of the lowest to highest values depending on your choice of dairy alternatives and protein powder.

INGREDIENT CHOICES AND SUBSTITUTIONS

There’s a lot here, the recipe itself is for the version I made to use the cubes shown, but there are so many subs available for this one.

At its core, this recipe needs something sweet, a healthy fat, and an optional protein source to make a creamy liquid to make the perfect texture for these ice cubes.

for the version shown, I used 150g of vegan Greek style yogurt as my healthy/ creamy fat. You can also use half an avocado, or two tablespoons of nut butter.

The protein powder is totally optional.

And for my frozen fruit, I used a pre-portioned pack of berries, but you can use whatever frozen fruit you want, whether that’s simply cherries or blueberries, or a pre-portioned pack of tropical fruits rather than berries.

HOW TO STORE AND KEEP

Store any frozen smoothie ice cubes in the freezer for up to six weeks.
